Helping the cane cutters

Meli-Melo in the Molasses is the fifth album of the series “Tikulu’s adventures”. It is also the second picture book written by Alain Gordon-Gentil. This new adventure is tinged with powerful colours and a touch of the Mauritian way of life. It is a thrilling and exotic picture book that abounds in colourful illustrations made by Henry Koombes.

This time, Tikulu takes us to a whole new world – that of sugarcanes and sugar factories. Tikulu is waiting for his friend Matapan by the gates of the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden. They are going to meet up with cane cutters and learn more about their difficult job.

In this children’s book, our young readers will discover part of our local environment: cane cutters, yellow wasps, mongooses and a sugar factory. It is the opportunity to learn more about the workings of sugar factories and the job of cane cutters.

This album has been published in 2002 with the help of the Fonds de soutien à l’édition of the Agence intergouvernementale de la Francophonie. It is available in bookstores and supermarkets throughout the island.
